February 14, 2012, NEW YORK CITY —The Buckminster Fuller Institute is pleased to announced today that it has published 103 entries to this year's Buckminster Fuller Challenge in the IDEA INDEX— BFI's remarkable repository of whole systems solutions to the world's most pressing problems.

"IDEA INDEX 1.0 is a searchable database of incredible ideas submitted by design pioneers and social innovators from all over the world", commented Elizabeth Thompson, BFI's Executive Director. "What you'll find is a collection of practitioners meaningfully engaged in systems change, all worthy of attention and support."

Entries were submitted from all parts of the world— the US, the UK, India, the Sahel, and the Arctic. They also came from nations such as South Africa, Rwanda, Barbados, Haiti, Spain, Afghanistan, The Netherlands, Taiwan, and China. Several student projects were entered from ETH Zurich/Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Universidad del Paas Vasco, California College of the Arts and GAIA University, among others. Of the 170 projects submitted on October 24, 2011, 103 will be published.

The 2012 Challenge review process is underway by BFI's internal team. A distinguished jury will begin their deliberation process soon to select a solution that best meets the rigorous criteria. Semi-Finalists will be announced in March 2012, Finalists will be announced in May 2012 and the winner will be revealed at a ceremony in New York City on June 6, 2012.

A statement from the Buckminster Fuller Institute:

In 1961 Fuller put forth the clarion call to "make the world work for 100% of humanity, in the shortest possible time, through spontaneous cooperation without ecological offense or disadvantage of anyone." To meet this call he saw the need for a design revolution.

Today, there is a movement of highly motivated individuals all over the world seriously engaged in coming up with solutions to the mounting set of global problems we face. These design pioneers and social innovators are taking on the challenge now, not waiting for large-scale institutions to deliver us to a sustainable and abundant future. They understand the critical role they play as the change agents for the future we all want to see. These are the type of people whose projects are entered in the 2011 Buckminster Fuller Challenge and published today by the Buckminster Fuller Institute (BFI) into the Idea Index.

By combining an emphasis on individual initiative and integrity with whole systems thinking, scientific rigor and faithful reliance on nature's underlying principles they are helping to advance our ability to understand and solve our most critical issues.

We admire their commitment and truly believe that the solutions to our intractable problems lies in the hearts, minds and synergies between the people who are on the front lines of what Fuller called comprehensive, anticipatory design. This design approach crosses disciplines, transcends conventional processes and gives us the tools, perspectives and strategies to take on and solve once and for all the global problems before us.
